My purpose in creating this blog is to help those who find themselves in a Radiology Department in an emergency and/or trauma situation feel informed and less fearful of what may happen. Before the fall of 2000, the Radiology Department was just another hallway in the hospital to me. I had never had an x-ray and so really had no knowledge of what took place there. I just figured it was somewhere people went after breaking bones so the doctors could know how to fix it.

Radiologic Technologist's Responsibilities

One of the main roles of Radiologic Technologists is to ensure the protection of the patient. We learn throughout our entire training how to best do this. There is a term called ALARA which stands for As Low As Reasonably Achievable. This concept refers to the amount of radiation that is needed to get a diagnostic image. With the needed information, the technologist has some control over how to determine what is safe, or beneficial, and what is placing the patient in more risk than is absolutely necessary.
